How can you cope with moments of anxiety

We can all have moments where things can get on top of us, we can get overwhelmed and that may get in the way of how we cope with tasks and what we are able to focus on.

You may feel worried about a certain situation that can trigger your anxiety.

It’s important to focus on the moment and that it will pass. Here are some tips that can also help to support you.

  1. Deep focused breathing – this helps your mind get the vital oxygen, but it also helps you take a pause. The trick is to breathe in for 4, hold for 4 and breathe out for 6. Try doing this for 5 minutes. To help your mind focus on something else, if you focus on the counting and breathing that will help bring calm.

  2. Question your internal narrative – We can self-sabotage by having negative thoughts, so challenge your thoughts and try and replace some of your internal dialogue with positive sentences and thoughts. Take back your control.

  3. Reflect and either talk to someone or journal about what your triggers are, what is it that got you anxious, was it something you noticed, something that was said.

  4. Create at least one daily habit that you are focused on to help you keep a routine of self-care, this could be a short walk before your day starts or 5 minutes of meditation. The daily practice will help you manage your anxiety long term.

Overall, it is most important to recognise the various signs of anxiety and to be kind to yourself.
